Heading South

As we near the pole we can see the tracks made by the ‘fuel train’- a procession of snowcats that drag huge bladders of fuel up to the South Pole station to run its many generators. In this photo it looks as though the skiers are heading into the sunset, but this is an illusion as the sun is actually high in the sky. The illusion is caused by blown ice crystals on the horizon reflecting the suns light and lighting the horizon up like a sunset.
